Envirofund Project
Sustainable Growing Systems (SGS)

In November 2006, NVCA received a grant of $32,708 to produce educational kits for the community and schools of the valley about the controversial and topical issue of Genetic Engineering in our agriculture and food.

The project specifically looks at how this technology is not sustainable, poses huge risks to the environment and human health and actually threatens the ability of growers to choose and continue using organic methods which are clean, green and sustainable.

With the NSW government deciding to lift the moratorium, banning the commercial release of GE canola, in March 2008, genetically engineered organisms are about to take a larger leap into the Australian environment and are now everyone’s business.

The educational kits will contain information on organic and biodynamic growing systems, as a safer alternative to GE. NVCA has hired a consultant, Ms Kelly Tudhope, LLB/BSocSc, due to her expertise in the area of Genetic Engineering, to prepare the kits. All information in the kits will be well referenced and based on an academic paper prepared by her on the topic.

The kits will include a summary booklet, summary information sheets, a poster and a power point presentation CD.

The project is coming along well with the kits due for release at a special NVCA function, a community dinner, in June 2008.
